One of the most important decisions to be made in the criminal justice system is the selection of an appropriate sentence, and the primary vehicle to assist in fulfilling this responsibility is the presentence investigation report. The authors describe results of a study by Abt Associates to evaluate the presentence investigation process and presentence reports (PSRs).
